Surat Penggembalaan Persekutuan Gereja-Gereja di Indonesia (PGI) dalam Rangka Pemilihan Presiden R.I. 2009

Saudara-saudara warga Gereja anggota PGI di mana pun berada,

Salam dalam kasih Yesus Kristus Juruselamat dunia,

Pemilihan Presiden dan Wakil Presiden tanggal 8 Juli 2009 makin mendekat, dan kampanye Pilpres sedang berlangsung. Kita bersyukur sebab demokrasi berada dalam proses pertumbuhan, kendati masih banyak hal yang harus dibenahi sehingga demokrasi tidak sekadar memenuhi prosedur yang ada, tetapi sungguh-sungguh memperhatikan dan merefleksikan nilai-nilai yang tercantum didalam Pancasila dan UUD 1945.

Persekutuan Gereja-gereja di Indonesia (PGI) dan Gereja-gereja anggotanya bukanlah partai politik atau organisasi yang menjalankan politik praktis, yaitu politik yang berusaha merebut kekuasaan dalam negara. Politik Gereja (baca: PGI) adalah politik moral atau yang bertujuan menyampaikan pesan-pesan moral atau suara kenabian di tengah zaman. Dalam kaitan itu PGI dan Gereja-gereja ikut bertanggung-jawab dalam kehidupan bersama didalam polis (negara) Indonesia. Orang Kristen Indonesia sebagai bagian integral bangsa harus mampu hidup bersama secara proaktif didalam masyarakat Indonesia yang majemuk.

Nabi Yeremia menyampaikan kepada Umat Israel yang sedang berada dalam tawanan di Babilonia sebagai berikut: “Usahakanlah kesejahteraan kota kemana kamu Aku buang, dan berdoalah untuk kota itu kepada TUHAN, sebab kesejahteraannya adalah kesejahteraanmu” (Yer. 29:7). Atas dasar itu, kita tidak boleh bersikap pasif menghadapi Pilpres ini, sebab agenda politik ini adalah salah satu upaya penting pembangunan politik bagi kesejahteraan bersama. Di dalam menghadapi Pilpres ini, kami ingin menyampaikan pesan Alkitab bagaimana memilih seorang pemimpin: “Di samping itu kau carilah dari seluruh bangsa itu orang-orang yang cakap dan takut akan Allah, orang-orang yang dapat dipercaya dan benci kepada pengejaran suap…” (Kel. 18:21).

Maka berdasarkan hal-hal yang disebutkan di atas, kami ingin menyampaikan kepada saudara-saudara agar kita memilih Presiden dan Wakil Presiden Indonesia pada Pemilihan Presiden yang akan datang dengan arahan-arahan sbb:

1. Pemimpin yang kita harapkan ialah mereka yang cakap, yakni mempunyai kemampuan dan keterampilan untuk mengatasi persoalan bangsa Indonesia terutama yang cakap dan mampu meningkatkan kesejahteraan rakyat yang masih dihimpit oleh belenggu kemiskinan. 
2. Pemimpin yang kita cari ialah pemimpin yang takut akan Tuhan, yaitu pemimpin yang menjalankan tugasnya dengan mengandalkan kekuatan moral, menjauhkan diri dari kebohongan dan segala bentuk manipulasi politik.
3. Pemimpin yang akan kita pilih ialah mereka yang dapat dipercaya yaitu mereka yang terbukti melakukan apa yang dia ucapkan. Telusurilah rekam jejak setiap kandidat sehingga saudara dapat mengetahui siapa dari antara mereka yang dapat dipercaya dan siapa yang tidak.
4. Pemimpin yang kita butuhkan ialah mereka yang benci kepada pengejaran suap yaitu mereka yang selain jujur dan tidak korupsi, mereka juga harus bertekad untuk memberantas korupsi yang menghancurkan per-ekonomian Negara ini.
5. Pemimpin yang kita akan pilih ialah mereka yang tetap mempertahankan Pancasila dan nilai-nilai yang ter-kandung di dalamnya sebagai acuan kehidupan ber-masyarakat, berbangsa dan bernegara. Presiden dan Wakil Presiden haruslah sungguh-sungguh mempunyai komitmen teguh kepada Pancasila, UUD 1945, Negara Republik Indonesia, Bhinneka Tunggal Ika (masyarakat majemuk, setara dan bersatu), dan cita-cita Proklamasi Kemerdekaan Indonesia.

Dampak Pilpres 2009 ini tidak hanya untuk periode 2009-2014 saja, melainkan berdurasi sangat panjang yang ikut menentukan nasib bangsa kita di masa depan. Salah memilih berarti membawa bangsa ini kepada penyimpangan yang berakibat fatal bagi kelestarian bangsa. 

Kita memilih bukan hanya Presiden dan Wakil Presiden, melainkan juga bangunan koalisi yang ada di belakangnya. Saudara-saudara harus melihat dengan jeli manakah dari pasangan koalisi itu yang tidak secara jelas menjadikan Pancasila sebagai solusi dalam kehidupan berbangsa dan bernegara, melainkan ideologi yang lain.

Saudara-saudara perlu memperhatikan sikap partai-partai politik selama ini yang tidak tegas menolak Undang-undang yang cenderung diskriminatif, seperti UU Pornografi dan Perda-perda yang diskrimnitif di berbagai daerah.

Saudara-saudara juga perlu jeli untuk melihat bagaimana sikap partai-partai politik terhadap kebebasan beragama dan berkeyakinan di Indonesia selama 4-5 tahun terakhir ini. Apakah golongan Kristen misalnya di beberapa tempat mempunyai kebebasan untuk mendirikan gedung-gedung ibadah atau malah sering dihambat, sedangkan tindakan konkret Pemerintah hampir tidak terlihat.

Pada akhirnya kami ingin menyatakan bahwa visi pembangunan bangsa kita bukan hanya untuk lima tahun mendatang, melainkan jauh melampauinya. Maka yang terutama adalah bagaimana membangun sistem demokrasi yang sehat, bukan sekedar kalah/menang dalam Pilpres. 

Kiranya Tuhan membimbing saudara-saudara di dalam menentukan pilihan yang tepat bagi bangsa ini. Tuhan menyertai saudara-saudara.

Communion of Churches in Indonesia (CCI) Pastoral Letter towards the Presidential Election of the Republic of Indonesia 2009

Dear brothers and sisters, members of church congregation of the CCI member churches, wherever you are, 

Greetings in the love of Jesus Christ, the world’s Savior, 

The Presidential Election on 8 July 2009 is approaching, and the campaign of the presidential election is taking place. We are grateful because of the democracy is in the process of growth, although there still many matters needed to be handled so that democracy does not just fill the available procedure, but seriously pay attention to and reflect the values are included in Pancasila and 1945 Constitution.

The Communion of Churches in Indonesia (CCI) and its member churches is not political party or organization that undertake practical politics, namely politics that attempts to seize authority in the country. Ecclesiastical politics (read: CCI) is moral politics or one that aims to convey moral messages or prophetical voice in this era. In relation to said matter the CCI and Churches are responsible in the common life in the polis (country) Indonesia. Indonesian Christians as the integral part of the nation must be capable to live together proactively in the plural society of Indonesia.

The prophet Jeremiah delivered to the Israeli who were under the Babylonian detainment as follows:“And seek the peace of the city whither I have caused you to be carried away captives, and pray unto the LORD for it: for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace" (Jeremiah 29:7). On this basis we may not have passive attitude in facing this Presidential Election, because this political agenda is one of the efforts of the political building for common prosperity. In anticipating the Presidential Election, we want to share the biblical message as to how to elect a leader: “Moreover thou shalt not provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God men of truth; hating covetousness …” (Exodus 18:21).

Hence based on the above mentioned matters, we want to share you that we choose the President and Vice-President of Indonesia on the coming Presidential Election under the following directives:

1. The leader whom we expect are those who are capable, namely in possession of capacity and skills to overcome the problem of the Indonesian nation, especially who is capable and can improve welfare of the people who still are squeezed by poverty shackle. 
2. The leader whom we look for is the leader who is frightened of the Lord, namely the leader who performs his/her task (duty) by relying on the moral strength; keep away himself/herself from lie and all forms of manipulation of politics.
3. The leader whom will be elected by us is him/her who is trustworthy, who is proven to do what he/she said. Investigate the track record of each candidate so that you may know who among them are trustful and who is not. 
4. The leader whom we need is him/her who hates to the pursuit of bribe that is far from honest and not corruption, they also must be determined to fight corruption that deteriorates the country’s economy.
5. The leader whom we are going to elect are those who continue to maintain Pancasila and the values contained inside as the life reference for having the community, nation, and the state. The president and the Vice-president must seriously have the commitment to Pancasila, 1945 Constitution, The State of the Republic of Indonesia, Bhinneka Tunggal Ika (plural society, equal and united), and the goals of the Proclamation of the Indonesian Independence.

The impact of this Presidential Election not only during the period 2009-2014, but has very long duration which will decide the fate of our nation in the future. Wrong in choosing means leading this nation into deviation that brings about fatal result for the conservation of this nation.

We will not only elect the President and the Vice-President, but also the available coalition structure behind. You have to be alert to see which of the coalition couples who not clearly make Pancasila as the solution in the life as a nation and state, but the other ideology.

Brothers and sisters also need to be alert to watch the attitude of the political parties which do not firmly reject Constitution that tends discriminatory, like Law of Pornography and discriminatory Regional Regulations in various regions.

Brothers and sisters need to be alert to watch how the political parties’ attitude towards freedom of religion and beliefs in Indonesia during the last 4-5 years. Is the Christian group, for example, in several places has the freedom to erect building for worship or even be often hindered, whereas the concrete action of the government is almost not seen.

Finally we want to say that the development vision of our nation not only during five forthcoming years, but far more exceeding. Then the most important point is how to develop the system of healthy democracy, not only just lost/win in the Presidential Election.

May the Lord lead you, brothers and sisters in determining your appropriate choice which is appropriate for this nation. The Lord is with you.
