Ecumenical Women's WorkshopThe CCM Women’s Work Committee in partnership with Tenaganita organized a workshop from 22nd - 24th August at Mandarin Court Kuala Lumpur. The aim of this workshop was to bring together women from different denominations / organizations throughout the country not only for the purpose of fellowship and building up one another, but with the mission to promote and protect the rights of all women. Though the topic for the workshop was "Plight of Migrant Domestic Workers" it covered beyond it. About 40 people participated in this program. The speakers were Haslina, Soo Choo, Aegile Fernandez and Irene Fernandez. Topics covered were "21st Century Slave Trade in Malaysia", "Understanding the Slave Trade - Root Causes & Perceptions", "How is the Government Dealing with it", and "Partnership Building". The participants were extremely shocked with the presentation on "Trafficking Women and Children". Many of us were almost in tears when we saw how the underaged children and women were used as sex slaves even today. The other topic was on the "Plight of Migrant Workers" (domestic). This session helped us to understand that due to lack of protection and recognition as workers, the Migrant Domestic Workers have been exploited and abused physically, sexually, and psychologically. As women we responded to stand for the rights of these migrant workers and together with the assistance from Tenaganita to bring awareness to our community and society.
